Pete Fiel Mwen

Categories: check in

Pronunciation – pay-tay fyelle mouenh

Growing up it was a term I heard a LOT from my elders.  Usually in relation to something they couldn’t take anymore of.  Something so overwhelming that they felt that their brains would blow out of their heads.   The direct translation speaks exactly to that.  A feeling so overpowering that they feel they’d lose their minds – physically and metaphysically.   Proper use would be like:

“M’te senti que fiel mwen t’ap pete.”
Translation:  “I felt like my head was going to explode”

Usually in relation to too much noise (typically from us kids) or too much stress.

Never thought of it as a real thing… like I’d actually see someone’s head explode.

Today, I cried so hard that my nose bled.   Not just like… little blood.  Like.   BLOOD.  And now I have a headache.

I guess this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to pete fiel mwen.

I have to get this under control.
